The new Berlin is on its way to becoming a proper capital city again
since the dismantling of the Wall but will there ever be an end to the
sand, dust, stone, glass and steel, the new roofs and towers atop the
old walls? A new underground railway line will run beneath the trees
lining the avenue of Unter den Linden. Schinkel's Academy of
Architecture, a veritable castle in the air, reaches for the sky
concealed behind the tiers of stones printed on its tarpaulin sheeting.
Cranes cluster around the Ostbahnhof railway station to haul the next
building up from the banks of the Spree. This is how the city has been
since the start of the century: Berlin is coming into being. ...
